the nursing home I worked at for 18 years had a lot of active participation especially on the Alzheimer’s unit. Those folks sure could get competitive when it came to the beach balls etc.! Music is a fantastic activity also. You get a resident who doesn’t know their own name but can sing a whole song!

God bless you for saying that (at the end). You are so right! It should be incorporated into all care centers. Not only music but active participation in playing physical games as well (beach balls, bouncing balls, etc.) It really makes people who may not have ever really participated come alive. Also going outside in the sunshine!

I feel blessed to have grown up in a house where as a child I was exposed to music from all different genres. I think it really helped me learn to appreciate different styles and cultures from all over. From hip hop, jazz, bossa, heavy metal, pop, easy listening, reggae, rock, funk, latin, african, classical, soul, dub, etc. Music is one of the few things that can unite all people. It doesn’t matter rich or poor, white or black, whatever religion, music will always touch the soul.
