Any online seller should have a list of compatible, or at least incompatible, devices.

So long as the file format is compatible with your iPod, you can use music from any source you like. The iPod supports: AAC (8 to 320 Kbps), Protected AAC (from iTunes Store), HE-AAC, MP3 (8 to 320 Kbps), MP3 VBR, Audible (formats 2, 3, 4, Audible Enhanced Audio, AAX, and AAX+), Apple Lossless, AIFF, and WAV.

You can download ANY kind of music but it MUST be in an MP3 format.
Yes you can use websites, but I use Frost Wire.
It’s free and you can download music videos, pictures, etc.
If you decide to use Frost Wire, just be sure that you don’t download files that are under 1MB.
